Do Homeschool Students Take State Tests?

There are many benefits to homeschooling your children and avoiding state testing can be one of the positives. Many states don’t require homeschool students to take traditional state testing. However, there are assessment requirements parents have to follow in some states.

Bypassing State Testing

Some states with testing requirements offer ways to bypass the assessments. For example, if you file as a private school in Ohio or Louisiana, you don’t have to follow state testing requirements. Parents who register with a homeschool association in South Carolina can also bypass state testing.

Other states allow homeschoolers to file under an umbrella school to avoid testing. ‘Umbrella schools’ are non-traditional private schools that provide accountability for homeschooling families.

By law, students under an umbrella school are not homeschoolers, but are instead considered private school students. However, these children still do all of their schoolwork at home.

Meanwhile, states like Georgia and North Carolina require state testing but don’t require parents to submit scores or proof. If you wish to avoid state testing where you live, you can check with your state to find the specific requirements.

How Umbrella Schools Work

The umbrella school oversees administrative services and keeps track of student records. Parents send in information about each of their children’s education, such as class subjects and grades. These umbrella schools also provide transcripts and validate diplomas.

States like Colorado, Florida, Maine, Maryland, Tennessee, and Washington allow parents to homeschool through umbrella schools. Students in these states bypass state testing by being a part of the school.

However, Washington requires umbrella schools to provide an assessment. Many umbrella schools in Washington don’t have assessments or testing beyond the state minimum requirements.

Preparing Your Child for Tests

State tests cover language arts, math, science, and more. Hands-on learning is one of the best ways for children to retain information.

We have the tools to spark curiosity and amplify your children’s learning experience. Learning strictly through reading and writing can cause children to miss critical concepts. By doing hands-on lessons, they will strengthen their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.

Home Science Tools offers hundreds of science lessons, projects, resources, and a revolutionary new science curriculum to help teach children science.

Wrapping Up

Navigating state testing requirements for homeschooled students can be complex. While some states don’t mandate traditional state testing, they have specific requirements that parents must follow.

Understanding your state’s requirements and ways to bypass testing can be helpful to your homeschool journey. Regardless of your state’s requirements, you can prepare your children for academic success using an engaging and effective curriculum.
