The Best Microscopes for Home or Classroom Use

Are you trying to choose the best student microscope for your home or classroom? A scientific microscope is both an enjoyable and important tool for science education that will last for years to come. And unless you are a seasoned science educator, you probably have some questions about how to choose the right one for your specific needs! This article will explain the main types of microscopes and help you choose the best one for your home or class environment.

What is a microscope?

A microscope is an instrument that makes an enlarged image of a small object, so it allows you to see details too small to be seen by the unaided eye.

What are the different microscope types?

There four most common microscope types are compound, digital, stereo, and pocket or handheld.  Here’s what makes each type unique:

Compound Microscope

  • The most commonly used type of microscope at home and in K-12 classrooms
  • Offers high magnification, between 40x-1000x
  • Uses an ocular lens (in the eyepiece) and an objective lens (close to the sample)

Stereo Microscope

  • Offers magnification at low power, between 10x and 200x
  • Often used to get a detailed look at something that is already visible to the bare eye
  • Also called a dissection microscope
  • Available in either fixed or zoom option

Digital Microscope

  • Uses the power of a computer to view objects not visible to the bare eye
  • Connects to a computer via a USB cable
  • View magnified objects on a computer monitor
  • Record and capture images of the magnified object

Pocket or Handheld Microscope

  • Magnifies from a range of 25x to 100x
  • Lightweight and portable makes for fun science exploration on-the-go
  • Available in LED model with a smartphone adapter

The Last Thing You Need to Know About Choosing a Microscope for Your Home or Classroom

One last important thing to note. Before you decide on a microscope, be sure to think of how your needs will change over the long term. Ask yourself “Will this microscope meet my needs for years to come, beyond this year?”

For example, a pocket microscope would be fun to take on field trips with third graders, but a compound microscope will serve students’ needs longer, throughout their high school years.

Make sure you do your research before you make a decision as to which microscope is right for you. When you do choose the right microscope for your home or classroom, know that you will be investing in a high-quality science instrument that will spark curiosity and discovery in your students learning for years to come.
