Complete Homeschool Science Curriculum: How Science Unlocked Compares

Homeschool science options fall into several categories: traditional curricula, literature-based programs, digital lessons, subscription kits, and stand-alone experiment kits. Many offer strong instruction or hands-on learning individually. What varies is what’s included, how the curriculum is organized, and whether it connects from grade to grade.

Science Unlocked combines a defined K-12 pathway, a clear plan for what students learn each year, hands-on investigations with included materials, a Student Workbook, a Teacher Guide, built-in assessment, and lessons aligned with national science standards. Here is how that combination compares to other homeschool science options.

Science Unlocked vs. Traditional Curricula (Apologia, REAL Science Odyssey)

Apologia and REAL Science Odyssey organize courses by subject and grade range. Students pick a course, such as Biology, designed for a range of grade levels rather than a specific grade.

In contrast, Science Unlocked assigns a named curriculum to each grade. There are 12 curricula, kindergarten through 12th grade, across three levels (Wonder: K-2, Accelerate: 3-7, Launch: 8-12). Twelve are full year. Each year has a clear learning sequence, with skills building from one module to the next and continuing from grade to grade.

Difference: Science Unlocked provides a specific curriculum for every grade. As a result, learning builds from year to year, rather than one subject course assigned to span several grades.

Science Unlocked vs. Literature-Based Programs (Sonlight, BookShark)

Sonlight organizes its science programs by levels that can span multiple grades. For example, Science A serves grades 1-3, Science B serves grades 2-4, and so on. Its programs include an Instructor’s Guide, books, experiments, and supplies.

Science Unlocked assigns one curriculum per individual grade. So, the pathway always specifies the student’s current course and the next one in sequence.

Difference: Science Unlocked gives families a grade-specific curriculum and a clear year-to-year pathway, rather than asking parents to choose from programs designed for broader grade ranges.

Science Unlocked vs. Digital Curricula (Mystery Science)

Mystery Science is a digital K-5 science program built around online lessons and activities.

Science Unlocked runs the full K-12 range and pairs its sequence with physical materials: a Student Workbook for predictions, observations, and answers; a Teacher Guide with sample answers for closed prompts and evaluation guidance for open-ended ones; and lab materials included beyond household items.

Difference: Mystery Science delivers science instruction digitally, while Science Unlocked gives families a physical curriculum with a Student Workbook, Teacher Guide, and lab materials together for each grade.

Science Unlocked vs. Subscription Boxes (MEL Science)

MEL Science takes a subscription-based approach, with science kits and learning resources delivered over time rather than as one complete, full-year curriculum purchase.

Science Unlocked gives families a complete, grade-specific science curriculum for the full year in one purchase. Each year includes a defined learning sequence, hands-on investigations, required materials, Student Workbook activities, Teacher Guide support, and built-in assessment.

Difference: MEL Science provides science learning through an ongoing subscription, while Science Unlocked provides everything needed for a full year of science in one purchase, with a K-12 pathway that continues from grade to grade.

Science Unlocked vs. Stand-Alone Experiment Kits (KiwiCo)

Individual kits supply materials for a single project, which are useful for enrichment or supplementing other curriculum, but they do not determine a year’s learning progression or give parents a way to evaluate understanding.

Science Unlocked also gives parents ways to check what their students understand. Think About It! Predict, Reflect, Show What You Know, and Claim-Evidence-Reasoning activities appear throughout every module. The Teacher Guide gives sample answers for closed prompts and evaluation guidance for open-ended ones.

Difference: Experiments connect to instruction, student work, and assessment rather than standing alone as the end product.

Science Unlocked Stands Apart

No single feature here is exclusive to Science Unlocked. Other programs offer hands-on experiments, included materials, complete courses, or align with science standards individually. However, the distinction is that Science Unlocked combines all of it, for every grade, in one K-12 pathway:

  • A named curriculum for each grade, K-12
  • A defined scope and sequence (6 or 9 connected modules)
  • Hands-on investigations with materials included
  • A Student Workbook and a Teacher Guide with answer guidance
  • Recurring, built-in assessment
  • Aligned with national science standards (NGSS)

At the high school level, Science Unlocked provides comprehensive standards coverage. High School Biology covers all 24 national high school life science expectations, Earth & Space Science covers all 19 earth and space science expectations, and Chemistry covers all 12 physical science standards for the course.

The combination of sequence, instruction, materials, student work, teaching support, and assessment for every grade is what makes Science Unlocked a complete curriculum. As a result, families don’t have to piece together science from separate courses, experiment kits, and resources. Instead, they’re receiving one pathway that covers what to teach, how to teach it, and what comes next. Explore Science Unlocked to find the curriculum designed for your student’s grade and start building their path through science!
