STEM Project Ideas

Stem project ideas, like building home robots, constructing green energy devices, and magnetic field demonstrations, are engaging ways to get kids involved in science. Children’s curiosity is enhanced when they take part in projects that produce real results. 

Before diving into a local STEM science fair, it might be worth looking into STEM learning toys. These at-home kits can introduce advanced concepts by starting simple and working toward more complex ideas. Once the kids are ready to tackle a real project, there are a lot of ideas that can take things to the next level.

Building a Robot

Building robots is easier than it sounds. Home STEM robotics kits can easily teach children the basics, such as how servos and microcontrollers work. After adding a chassis and some wheels, children have their first car. From here, the child can experiment with various pieces and parts to construct all sorts of simple robots. 

With the fundamentals grasped, it’s time to decide on a robotics project. Aim for something novel. Alternatively, take an existing and popular idea and modify or improve it for a specific task. 

The best innovations in science often occur when someone takes existing technology and looks at it from a fresh angle. Robotics is no different. With unique ideas and perseverance, children can find some very creative solutions. Once they can construct simple machines, they can move on to other devices.

Green Energy Projects

Solar, wind, and thermal are all ways to generate green energy, and home STEM kits focusing on green energy can teach children how it works. A unique way to incorporate both wind and thermal is to build a convection tower. This simple invention relies on the principle of heat rising. First, construct a hollow tower from aluminum cans or PVC pipe. Paint the tower black and secure it to some bricks that allow air to flow under and up through the pipe. 

Place a small fan inside the top of the pipe attached to a simple generator motor and battery. Once finished, take the convection tower outside on a sunny day and it should begin to work almost immediately as the tower gets heated by the black paint and sun. 

To understand how the generator works, it helps to know how magnets play a role.

Unique Magnetic Demonstrations

Iron filings and bar magnets are old-fashioned demonstrations that aren’t much fun. Kids today should be playing with the cutting edge. Ferrofluid is a fun and modern way to demonstrate magnetic fields. 

Making ferrofluid requires only two ingredients: iron filings and oil. Any oil will do, but vegetable oil is recommended. Mix in the iron filings until the mixture is thick but still liquid. Now find a few magnets. The best are old speakers wrapped in plastic. 

Place the ferrofluid near the speaker for some spectacular effects from both the sound and the magnetic fields.

Taking It to the Next Level

Once a child has mastered the basics and wants to get serious, STEM fairs are everywhere. If you’re wondering what a STEM fair project is, it’s the same as projects made at home–just more comprehensive. STEM fairs also offer competition at national and international levels; they often provide scholarships and opportunities to work with major STEM corporations.
